PASADENA, CA – June 17, 2025
Chelsea made a strong start to their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC at the Rose Bowl, thanks to goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez. Although the match was far from one-sided, the Premier League giants showed their quality when it mattered most.

Chelsea’s Professionalism Makes the Difference

Speaking after the match, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca praised his team’s professionalism and determination, noting that the win was anything but easy.

“It was a tough match,” Maresca said. “LAFC made us work hard, but the hunger and mindset of our players got us through.”

While the Blues didn’t completely dominate the game, their superior composure and experience allowed them to manage the contest and take their chances.

Pedro Neto Opens the Scoring

Chelsea found their rhythm midway through the first half. In the 34th minute, new signing Pedro Neto produced a brilliant move in the penalty area before calmly slotting the ball past Hugo Lloris to make it 1-0.

Neto’s goal lit up the match and drew loud cheers from the large number of Chelsea supporters in the crowd, many of whom traveled from across the United States.

LAFC Threatens but Falls Short

After halftime, LAFC raised the intensity. They pushed forward and created several dangerous moments, with Denis Bouanga frequently testing Chelsea’s backline. However, their finishing let them down as promising opportunities were wasted.

Despite their spirited efforts, the hosts couldn’t find a breakthrough. Chelsea’s back four, anchored by Axel Disasi and Benoît Badiashile, held firm under pressure.

Delap and Enzo Seal the Deal

The match was ultimately decided by Chelsea’s substitutes. Just minutes after coming on, young forward Liam Delap linked up with Cole Palmer on the right wing. Delap delivered a pinpoint cross that found Enzo Fernandez, who coolly finished to double Chelsea’s lead in the 73rd minute.

The second goal effectively ended LAFC’s hopes of a comeback.

Group D Standings and What’s Next

With this victory, Chelsea sits atop Group D with three points. They will now watch closely as Tunisian side ES Tunis takes on Brazilian giants Flamengo later today. The result of that clash will determine the full standings after Round 1.

Chelsea will next face Flamengo in what promises to be one of the most anticipated group matches of the tournament.
