PSG Dominate Atlético Madrid 4-0 to Open Club World Cup in Style

PASADENA, California — Paris Saint-Germain made a powerful statement on Sunday with a 4-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the opening match of their Club World Cup campaign at the Rose Bowl.

Early Lead Sets the Tone

PSG struck first in the 19th minute. Fabián Ruiz picked up the ball outside the box and launched a stunning shot past the keeper. That goal came just weeks after PSG crushed Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final.

Despite the long break, Luis Enrique’s squad looked sharp from the start. They dominated possession and kept Atlético on the back foot for most of the match.

Counter-Attack Doubles the Advantage

Just before halftime, Atlético’s Antoine Griezmann missed a key opportunity. PSG immediately responded with a counter-attack. Vitinha finished the move with a calm strike, giving PSG a 2-0 lead.

“It’s difficult to stay consistent in football,” Vitinha said after being named Man of the Match. “But today, we did it. It was a very good performance from everyone.”

Atlético’s Misfortunes Pile Up

Atlético thought they had pulled one back in the 57th minute when Julián Álvarez found the net. However, VAR ruled out the goal due to a foul by Koke in the build-up.

Moments later, things got worse for the Spanish side. Clement Lenglet received a second yellow card and left the pitch. Then, Alexander Sørloth missed a near-certain goal, sending the ball over from close range.

PSG Finish the Job in Style

PSG didn’t slow down in the final minutes. Substitute Senny Mayulu added a third goal in the 87th minute. In stoppage time, Lee Kang-in converted a penalty to seal the 4-0 result.

Without star winger Ousmane Dembélé, who’s recovering from injury, PSG still dominated every aspect of the match. They held 74% possession and registered 11 shots on target. In contrast, Atlético managed just one.

Looking Ahead

PSG will stay in Pasadena and face Brazilian club Botafogo on Thursday. Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, travel north to Seattle for a clash with MLS side Seattle Sounders FC.
